Types of Resveratrol Products
I had a long talk with a representative from a major Nutritional Supplement store chain this past week (the chain shall remain nameless). We discussed the different categories of product that fall under Resveratrol supplements. Overall, he saw four (4) different categories.
First, he gave me a warning for consumers: “If the product and/or website doesn’t have a Supplement Facts listing the number of mg (milligrams) of Resveratrol, the quality (50%, 98%, etc.) and specifically say Trans-resveratrol, don’t buy it.”
1. Polyphenol and Antioxidant Cocktails
Products with many different polyphenols and antioxidants, that include a small amount of Resveratrol (~50 mg) in their combination blends. They may also include berry extracts, green tea extracts, etc., all in low dosages. These are like basic multivitamins with an emphasis on a certain variety of ingredients with similar properties, and do not provide the true benefits of Resveratrol and polyphenols.
2. Low level Resveratrol “Vitamins”
Products that are pure Resveratrol, but at low dosages (50 – 100 mg), and generally use 50% purity product. These are akin to taking a basic vitamin C tablet. They have some effect, but overall very minor health benefits. Also, the “other 50%” is impurities, such as Emodin, which can cause diarrhea.
3. High Level Pure Resveratrol
These products are generally only 98% pure Resveratrol (again, check the label), and good quality, and have between 300 – 500 mg of Trans-resveratrol. Most of these products are very expensive, niche products. They have provide health benefits, but only from Resveratrol.
4. Resveratrol Formulations
Products that use high quality 98%+ pure Trans-Resveratrol (250 – 500 mg), in combination with other red wine grape polyphenols and Quercetin, which add health benefits, and contribute to the bioavailability of the Resveratrol. These products will have the highest amount of health benefits. Vindure 900 is one of these products.
Of course, there are always products that are in between these categories.
So which type of Resveratrol product should you take? Certainly I’m biased, but for my money and my body, I’d choose the product that has 1) the best 98% pure quality Resveratrol, 2) the higher dosage, and 3) the combination of Resveratrol and other red wine polyphenols. Vindure 900 has all of these attributes.
