1. Amount of Resveratrol

ResGrape (2 tablet dosage) = 200 mg of 99% pure Resveratrol

Dr. James Smoliga studied humans in 2006, with a dosage of 400 mg of Resveratrol along with Red Wine grape extracts and Quercetin. His studies showed a marked improvement in strength, memory, and endurance – with no side-effects.

In 2002, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences commissioned a report, “Trans-resveratrol Review of Toxicological Literature.”  A review of more than 200 referenced scientific studies showed that there were no reported adverse effects from Resveratrol on humans. Massive dosage studies were also performed on animals. “The no observed adverse affect level (NOAEL) was 300 mg/kg/day,” which would be a human equivalent dosage of 30,000 mg or 10–100 times the concentrations contained Vindure 900.

1. Mixed-polyphenols. Resveratrol supplements should also include a healthy dose of Quercetin and red wine grape extracts (remember again that 17 polyphenols in red wine grapes were found to activate SIRT survival genes).

According to Dr. Joseph Maroon in an article published by Bottom Line Health, in September 2009 (The Simple Supplement that May Prevent killer Diseases – All about resveratrol), “because Resveratrol absorption is thought to be enhanced when combined with other natural polyphenols, a mixed-polyphenol supplement is best.” [Dr. Maroon is a professor of neurological surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) and author of The Longevity Factor: How Resveratrol and Red Wine Activate Genes for a Longer and Healthier Life ]

1. High Resveratrol Dosage. Scientific studies in both animals and humans have shown that a high Resveratrol dosage is required to activate sirtuins. A daily dosage of 300 – 500 mg is recommended from data in both human studies, and animal studies (which calculate equivalent human dosages). Furthermore, studies reviewed by the FDA have shown no toxicity to humans even at dosages in the 5,000 – 10,000 mg range and beyond.

1. Resveratrol Quality. Not all Resveratrol ingredients are the same. The best Resveratrol is from polygonum cuspidatim (Japanese Knotweed plant), and is at least 98% pure trans-Resveratrol. Many products use only 20% or 50% purity ingredients. Supplements claims of “pure resveratrol” are meaningless without the percentage of purity. If the label doesn’t list the purity, you simply don’t know what you’re getting. Read the supplement labels and website specifications of products.

Equally important, the nutraceutical supplement should be manufactured in a processing plant that has important certifications including FDA, TGA, and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices), which ensure the supplement contains no contaminants and undergoes extensive testing. “I recently found my way into a Shaklee representative’s internet portal for Shaklee nutritional products. The company says one dose is equivalent to 3000 glasses of red wine, and carries a cost of $99 per thirty day supply…”

You are correct, according to the Shaklee website, ”A 30-day supply of Vivix delivers the equivalent amount of resveratrol found in 3,000 glasses of red wine.”

But, that’s for a 30-DAY SUPPLY !!! 
3,000 glasses per month = 100 glasses per day @ 1 mg per glass = 100 mg of Resveratrol per day, which if you read their website carefully is what they say.

Vindure 900 is 400 mg per day = 100 bottles per 1 DAY = 500 glasses per day, or 15,000 glasses per 30 days. Any way you look at it, Vindure is 4x Shaklee’s daily dosage.

And Vindure costs $39.95 per month.

You’ve got to read the fine print 

1. Take polygonum cuspidatum (Japanese Knot Weed) and de-leaf, de-stem, etc. This is done at the source.

2. Extract using Water and Ethanol by “soaking” the leaves in the liquid in the manufacturing plant. The trans-resveratrol then gets absorbed into the liquid This will get you to some purity level (not sufficient – yet most companies stop at this step)

3. Concentrate the liquid, remove Ethanol, etc.

4. KEY STEP Purify using column purification system. This step is expensive, which is why most manufacturers don’t do it.

5. Keep repeating step #3 until the 98% purity is achieved

6. Spray dry to remove the liquid and turn into a powder, then granulate to remove the air

For Resveratrol and other polyphenols, sulfur and sugar-like molecules attach themselves to the polyphenols, which lessens the “free” resveratrol left to circulate in the blood. Despite this phenomenon, Dr. Walle of the Medical University of South Carolina found that the resveratrol attached to the sugar-like molecules stayed in the blood stream for a long time. 

Several scientific studies have shown and confirmed that Quercetin inhibits the attachment of the sulfur molecules to Resveratrol in the liver, thereby increasing the amount of Resveratrol available in the bloodstream. Quercetin was also discovered to be only 2nd to Resveratrol in increasing Sirtuin (SIRT) genes and enzymes.

It can thus be concluded that not only are plant and red wine polyphenols both bioactive themselves, they are synergistic with others such as Resveratrol in promoting their health benefits.

According to Dr. Joseph Maroon in his book The Longevity Factor, ”optimal absorption and benefit appear to occur when Resveratrol is included with other polyphenols like quercetin.”

We recently posed this question of Resveratrol Dosage to 2 world-renowned Professors at Marywood University and the University of Pennsylvania who have been doing research on Resveratrol for over 7 years. In this Blog Post (below), I’ll refer to them Dr. S and Dr. B, as they do not wish to be seen as endorsing any products. Here are their email responses to me.

Dr. S:

“I beleve there are one or two articles examining the pharmacokinetics of it [dosage] (combined with safety) which found it to be safe in up to 5g [5,000 mg] doses, I believe.  It appears that with dosages in the 400 mg range, it reaches a peak and then subsides, whereas in the 1g (1,000 mg) or more range, higher blood concentrations are maintained.  However, I believe it is not yet certain whether which would be more advantageous – to have a rise in fall in resveratrol concentration or a steady level of resveratrol.  Based on some of the physiology, I would think a rise and fall mechanism would actuallly be more beneficial, and if this is the case the 400mg dosage should work quite nicely.”

“We used ~5-30 mg/kg in our mice, and Johan Auwerx used 200-400 mg/kg.  If you subscribe to the “allometric scaling” by body surface area method, you divide by 12 to go from mouse to human, yielding ~150 mg or ~2g [2,000 mg] as the respective human-equivalent doses.  But since other polyphenols may have an additive or synergistic effect, I think it’s quite likely that Vindure is delivering the effect of a 2g [2,000 mg] dose of pure resveratrol – I would love to see pharmacokinetic data comparing Vindure to the resveratrol alone.”
